Suicide of 13-year-old Secaucus is linked to acne drug, parents say
-The Star-Ledger
12/10/2009 - A 13-year-old Secaucus teen who committed suicide was taking an acne medication that some studies suggested a link to psychological issues, and his parents suspect the drug somehow caused him to suffer a brief psychosis and commit suicide, a report in NorthJersey.com said.
Derek Lagos had no history of depression, but the teen killed himself right after arriving home from school, according to the report. Upon questioning, parents remembered that their dermatologist said the son of a politician committed suicide while taking the name brand Accutane, which has the same drug, isotretinoin, as their son's medication, Sotret.
Researchers this January evaluated previous studies of isotretinoin and concluded the link to suicidal thoughts, and 260 suicides between Sept. 30, 2006 and August 31, 2009 associated with isotretinoin products were reported to the Food and Drug Administration, the report said.
Ingrid Schultze-Lagos, Derek's mother, told the newspaper she has no plans to sue the maker and will concentrate on memorial efforts.
