FDA warning issued for smoking cessation drugs
-Examiner
07/02/2009 - Chantix and Zyban are both commonly prescribed drugs used to treat nicotine addiction in smokers hoping to quit the habit. Both drugs have proven to be successful in reducing nicotine cravings in addicted smokers, although serious side effects have been reported.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (the “FDA”), some people taking Chantix and Zyban have reported severe behavioral symptoms including depression, hostility and suicidal thoughts.
In response to these reports, the FDA issued a public health advisory on July 1, 2009 warning of the potential for serious behavioral side effects when taking these smoking cessation drugs. Further, the FDA will require that the manufacturers of Chantix and Zyban place additional boxed warnings in the prescribing information, calling attention to the severe behavioral symptoms that have sometimes been associated with these drugs.
The FDA has noted however, that behavioral symptoms such as depression, anxiety, restlessness and sleeplessness can also be related to nicotine withdrawal, and as Chantix and Zyban do not contain nicotine, withdrawal symptoms could be a factor.
The FDA emphasizes that any changes in behavior when taking these medications should be reported to a health professional right away.
