What is Vioxx?

Vioxx (Generic, Rofecoxib) is a prescription COX-2 selective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was approved by the FDA in May 1999 for relief of the Vioxxsigns and symptoms of osteoarthritis, for the management of acute pain in adults, and for the treatment of menstrual symptoms. Vioxx was later approved for the relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in adults and children. Worldwide sales of totaled $2.55 billion last year. Since the introduction of the drug in 1999, 91 million prescriptions have been written in the Unites States alone. Vioxx is sold in some countries under the name Ceoxx.

Recently a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association linked Vioxx to blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes.

Other serious Vioxx side effects are:

  • Serious stomach problems, such as stomach and intestinal bleeding, can occur with or without warning symptoms. These problems, if severe, could lead to hospitalization or death. Although this happens rarely, you should watch for signs that you may have this serious side effect and tell your doctor right away.
  • Serious allergic reactions including swelling of face, lips, tongue, and/or throat which may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing occur rarely but may require treatment right away.
  • Serious kidney problems occur rarely, including acute kidney failure and worsening of chronic kidney failure.
  • Severe liver problems occur rarely in patients taking NSAID's. Tell your doctor if you develop symptoms of liver problems. These include nausea, tiredness, itching, tenderness in the right upper abdomen, and flu-like symptoms.

Due to such serious side effects Merck voluntarily issued a Vioxx recall on September 28, 2004. It is estimated that nearly 30,000 Vioxx heart attack deaths have occurred since Vioxx was approved by the FDA.
