Smith & Nephew withdraws knee products

Smith & Nephew has withdrawn two of its knee replacement products from sale in the U.S. after potential problems were identified, Dow Jones reports.
The products, Oxinium Genesis II and Profix II, together account for less than 1% of the company's total sales, a spokesman says.
Medical device company Smith & Nephew's international headquarters is in London. Its orthopedic business is based in Memphis, where the company employs about 1,650 people.
The company voluntarily withdrew only the versions of the two knee-replacement products that don't use cement to keep them in place.
Of about 3,000 knee replacements that Smith & Nephew has carried out in the U.S. without cement, about 33 patients had to have the operation again because the product came loose.
The failure rate of just above 1% is within regulatory guidelines. Smith & Nephew still decided to withdraw the products while it investigates the cause of the failure.
"We hold customer care in the highest regard," the company spokesman says.
