Merck says it's ready to settle claims with more than 44,000 former Vioxx users

03/05/2008 - The pharmaceutical company Merck says it's ready to settle claims with more than 44,000 former Vioxx users.
Merck agreed to hand out $4.85 billion if 85 percent of the potential claimants registered by last Friday, and Merck says it's received enough paperwork to move forward.
In the first half of this decade, Vioxx was one of the most commonly prescribed non-narcotic painkillers.
Merck took Vioxx off the market in 2004, after a study showed patients taking the drug had a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes.
